FISHERY AND AQUACULTURE EXPORTING SECTOR
Guatemala borders both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The Pacific Ocean is particularly
rich in shrimp and open water fish, where species such as tuna, red snapper
and shark are the main marine fishery products harvested and exported.
The
fisheries sector is also made up from products coming from aquaculture, where
salt water shrimp is the second main product of export value in Guatemala. Now days, the shrimp
production utilizes advanced technology and work under international
innocuous, labor and environmental standards.
In
the last few years, the fishery and aquaculture sector has exported 40
million dollars yearly on average. However, this sector has a high potential
growth through larger ocean harvests and increased production in aquaculture.
There
are around 25 companies that export fishery products and around 20,000
producers including small fishermen.
