Furniture
and Forest Products
The word Guatemala
comes from the Nahuatl Guauhtemallan voice which means Land of Trees, Mayan
heritage for a country with forests everywhere that are a lung for the planet
as well as a source of forestry products that today are exported and sold
worldwide.
Forests cover a
surface of 55,968 km2, equivalent to 51.4% of the national territory. The
departments with the largest forest areas where there is production are Petén,
Quiche, Huehuetenango, Alta and Baja Verapaz, and Izabal.
AGEXPORTs
Commission of Furniture Manufacturers and Forestry Products, COFAMA in
Spanish, is a secondary part of the sector corresponding to the part
of the industry which provides added value to raw materials, and where
different institutions oversee the integration and development of all the
forestry sector of Guatemala. COFAMA groups more than 90 companies dedicated
to the manufacturing of furniture, handicrafts, doors, prefabricated homes
and diverse types of wood manufactures and other forest products.
Growth and
development of the sector
The Forestry sector
has been identified as one of the main points of development for the country.
That is why the Guatemalan Forestry Cluster Office was created and a
development strategy was established for the sector. For the next 4 years,
our goal is to double exports. To accomplish this, we are focusing our work
in the following:
MARKET
INTELLIGENCE
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF IMPORTS AND EXPORTS
DESIGN AND INNOVATION
PRODUCTIVITY QUALITY
TRADE SHOWS
TRAINING
REPRESENTATION
SOCIAL BUSINESS RESPONSIBILITY
ALLIANCES
Under this context,
the main goal of COFAMA is to diversify and increase exports of Wood
products. Therefore, we hold trade shows such as the XXI Edition of
EXPOMUEBLE- EXPOFORESTAL. For 2008, we will hold the 1st Edition
of the Supplying Trade Show.
Following are our
updated export statistics up to October 31st, 2007.
